Often, early in our political carreers, we wonder if we should even play? Do we have the skills needed? Will we be able to be successful?
Do I understand the rules, the people, and the landscape well enough to have a chance or should I just sit quietly by and take no risks?
How to lose at politics
Be a pawn. If you aren't moving pieces then you are the pawn at the whims of those people who are playing the game. The pawn is a very valuable piece, and it has a specific task assigned to it. What is the task of the pawn? Stated simply, it is to sacrifice itself for the betterment of other pieces on the board. To help the game players win. What to lose? Be the pawn.
Want to know the fastest ways to lose the political game?
- Don't play, if you don't play you can never win.
- Be a mushroom, keep yourself in the dark and live off of manure. Not knowing what's going on is an easy way to lose.
- Be too afraid to move or take action, someone else will eventually happily do your job for you.
- Be bitter and disappointed, wondering when someone will recognize you for your great accomplishments.
- Wait for someone to hand you power, since power is never given but only taken, you will easily wait forever.
How to win the game
- As our state lottery indicates, "you can't win if you don't play". Try it, make the effort, you certainly won't be worse off, and if you don't win this time, you'll learn skills to help you win next time. And besides, your odds of winning at politics are much higher than the state lottery.
- Use your head. Think things through, imagine yourself in your bosses shoes, what would he want? Or his boss? What would he need, expect, want to know, or even appreciate? Fill that need and become indispensible.
- Go get that raise, promotion, or bonus you seek, don't wait for it to appear magically. Market your value to those around you so that they are afraid NOT to give you that raise or promotion that you seek.
- Take the reigns. You boss is busy, too busy. If you can take over some of his work, you help him out and start the process of positioning yourself to fill his shoes when he moves up or out. Take on the hard work, the dirty, grimy, or difficult tasks such as budgeting or cost tracking that no one likes to do.
- Count the steps to the top. How many layers are between you and the CEO? 5? 10? That's how many promotions you need to BE the CEO. When you look at it that way, it's not really so much is it?
Play. Think. Act. Assume. Win.
